For a remote island like Pascua, shortwave still is a very necessary and reliable way for communication - either for direct communication with Santiago, or for immediate contact to any aircraft beyond VHF-range approaching, leaving, or passing the island.

Above you see the control tower of Mataveri airport - the shortwave dipole cannot be overseen.

Here are some leftovers from the old logarithmic-periodic antenna, which used to carry the radioteletype signals for the aeronautical fixed telecommunications network to Santiago de Chile (see handpainting on qsl of Michael Oexner). This 'garbage' was on ground close to the 2 dipoles above.

 

At last, there is a real 'tourist' picture: myself, shortly before entering flight LA-842 back to Santiago de Chile...
