On the southwest end of the runway of Mataveri airport, there is the NDB 'R', with a very long wire antenna

The same antenna from a different point of view

a very nice look to the west, with the wide pacific in the background

To my big surprise - when I sorted out all the pictures, I suddenly noted, that there must be 2 different NDB antennas at this place. Watch the details - this antenna has 3 wires, and the colors of the masts are different. It is a little closer to the the runway than that antenna of the last 3 pictures. It could be seen only from one position; and from that position you should have seen the one-wire-antenna, too... ?!?

Probably they actually have 2 different NDBs close to each other, surely due to the lack of any other transmitter of wider range on the island, to ensure radio navigation in case of the failure of other systems. Mataveri is the only airport within about 3.000 km to ANY direction... But still it's funny, that you cannot see the second antenna from the location of the first antenna. At least, you see a trace of the first antenna on this picture, a little white and red top of a mast.

On Google Earth, it is hard to see a trace of the second antenna; it should be around the position of the lightning, and my feet were approximately at the star-position.

The yellow pin-point is the .kmz mark from Michael Oexner's Handbook, it should mark the given position of NDB 'R', and indeed it is very close to the little transmitter hut. Quite strange...
